Contribution to collective workConclusion to Sport Management in Europe(Edward Elgar, 2025-11) Schwizer, Dominik; Bayle, Emmanuel; Klenk, Christoffer; Mrkonjic, Michael; Mrkonjic, Michael; Bayle, Emmanuel; Klenk, Christoffer; Schwizer, DominikThe European model of sport is diverse but based on solidarity between grassroot, professional and elite sport. For example, different countries have different political frameworks, traditions and institutions. Sports governance plays a key role in this. It enables transparent, participatory and effective management in the public, non-profit and private sectors. Individual sport organizations face the challenge of clearly positioning themselves, using resources efficiently, and thus ensuring long-term competitiveness. Growing demands necessitate increasing professionalization. The need for training and continuing education in sport management is growing. Moreover, digitalization offers many opportunities but also numerous challenges. Modern technologies are transforming communication, influencing fan engagement, enabling new forms of data analysis and creating possibilities for innovative business models. Furthermore, inclusion and diversity are gaining importance in sport. Growing attention is being paid to ensure that sport is open and accessible to different population groups. Sustainability is being increasingly considered as a guiding principle. Social, ecological and economic responsibilities are more than ever before being demanded by society, business and politics. As a result, sport is faced with balancing economic, societal and political interests. The complex challenges facing sport require cross-sectoral collaboration and the creation of synergies through cooperation. Innovation, adaptability and value-based action are important prerequisites for facilitating change in sport management in the European context. This conclusion provides insights into the various fields of activity in modern sports management in Europe and offers young professionals and other interested parties illustrative examples of how managers in the various sectors of sport deal with these challenges. Contribution to collective workFor-profit sector(Edward Elgar, 2025-11) Schwizer, Dominik; Mrkonjic, Michael; Bayle, Emmanuel; Klenk, Christoffer; Schwizer, DominikThe increasing commercialization and professionalization of sport has made management more complex. The for-profit sector has played a pivotal role in adapting to these changes and influencing the evolution of sport organizations. Part II of this Handbook describes the dynamics of this sector, emphasizing the role and development of professional sport leagues, listed companies and sport brands. These private organizations generate substantive economic value in the European context. In order to achieve their financial goals, they must anticipate and address the diverse needs of consumers or fans, as well as respond to global trends such as digitalization and societal changes. The four chapters in Part II explore the sector's impact, offering insights into current economic conditions and future trends. As the pressure to innovate, engage stakeholders and ensure sustainability grows, these chapters provide valuable guidance and practical tools for sport managers navigating the economic challenges of the European model of sport. Contribution to collective workPublic management and the promotion of health-enhancing physical activity: an introduction to impact orientation(Edward Elgar, 2025-11) Derungs, Curdin; Nieffer, Ruth; Mrkonjic, Michael; Bayle, Emmanuel; Klenk, Christoffer; Schwizer, DominikThis chapter examines the role of public management in promoting health-enhancing physical activity and the importance of government action in addressing declining levels of physical activity in the population. We begin by discussing the justification for government intervention in the form of providing public or merit goods, regulating externalities and reducing information asymmetries. We then introduce the impact-oriented approach to physical activity promotion and describe how the Input-Output-Outcome-Impact (I-O-O-I) model can be used to evaluate public health interventions. The Canton of Grisons provides an example of how the model can be applied in practice and highlights the challenges of implementing effective government policies within a context of multiple regional and local stakeholders. Key recommendations include fostering collaboration between different levels of government and private actors, securing long-term funding and prioritizing targeted interventions for vulnerable populations. Article in conference proceedingsA Methodology for Computing Irrational Numbers(IEEE, 2024) Keller, Thomas; Burch, Michael; Rölke, HeikoIrrational numbers are difficult to compute due to their non-rational nature, i.e. they cannot just be expressed as a ratio consisting of two integer numbers. Various examples of these irrational constants exist, like the circle’s circumference to its diameter π, Euler’s number e, the Golden ratio ϕ, or the square roots of 2,3, or 5, and the like. Irrational numbers can be expressed as a sequence of decimal digits just like other real numbers, however, they do not terminate nor do they contain some kind of repeating number pattern. The goal of our work is to efficiently compute and store a very large irrational number by computing as many digits as possible. This test is designed to improve our ability to compute and process extremely large datasets in order to prepare ourselves for future real-world applications based on computational-intensive data analytics concepts, hence high-performance computing is required to solve such data-related problems. To reach these goals we make use of two AMD processors with one terabyte of RAM and 64 cores in total, and an aggregated 510 terabytes of disk space. To run such a computation, we employ 38 hard disk drives running at 7,200rpm.34 of these disks are used as swap space and 4 disks will hold the final digits. We illustrate our approach by applying it to the irrational number π and compute 62.8 trillion decimal places of it. Finally, we discuss scalability issues, limitations, challenges, and future directions of our methodology. Was wird optimiert? Article in conference proceedingsSources of Restaurant Recommendations and Their Importance for Consumers in Known and Unknown Areas(Springer International Publishing, 2025) Beier, Michael; Schillo, Katrin; Nixon, Lyndon J.B.; O'Conner, Peter; Tuomi, AarniIt is vital for restaurants to understand how to make potential customers aware of what they have to offer. Authentic recommendations from others play an important role in this regard. In this study, we examined eight potential sources of such restaurant recommendations in terms of their importance to potential restaurant guests. Based on a survey of 1,004 people in Germany and Switzerland, we collected information on the perceived importance of recommendation sources, differentiating between restaurant recommendations for known and unknown areas to potential guests. To do this, we first examined the importance ratings of the respondents. We also looked in detail at how these ratings differed for known and unknown areas. Finally, we analyzed the similarities in the ratings of the eight restaurant recommendation sources and clustered them into two groups using an exploratory factor analysis. Our findings provide practitioners with a better understanding of how to attract new customers to restaurants, which can be used to develop and implement better customer acquisition strategies. BookOrganizational Corruption, Crime and Covid-19(Routledge, 2024-10-09) Hauser, Christian; Amann, Wolfgang; Stachowicz-Stanusch, Agata; Kleinhempel, Matthias; Tripathi, ShivCorruption often flourishes in times of uncertainty and crisis. When institutions and oversight are weak, and public trust low, corruption can thrive and undermine how societies respond to the crisis. Covid-19 brought this issue into sharp focus, and this book uncovers some of the problems experienced across the globe and, crucially, explains how organizations and countries can strengthen their anti-corruption systems to prevent problems in the future. The book has been created by the members of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education group on anti-corruption and brings together top international experts to consolidate the lessons from the Covid-19 crisis in order to improve transparency, integrity, trust, and governance in the future. Cybersecurity and cybercrime related to the pandemic are a particular focus. These factors are essential to social and economic order. Practice-oriented, each chapter offers examples of methods, approaches, tools, and cases which can be used for anti-corruption teaching, policy, and corporate initiatives. With insights and cases from right across the globe, the book will be of interest to NGOs, policymakers, organizational leaders, students, and researchers looking to foster accountability, integrity, and transparency across organizations in times of crisis. Most of the time, two or more structures have to be in place e.g. a fileserver that includes versioning for large files and a relational database for the tabular information. These structures necessitate the handling of multiple systems at the same time. With the arrival of Hadoop and other big data technologies, qualitative data and quantitative data can now be stored as mixed mode data in the same structures. This paper will discuss our findings in developing an early prototype version of MMRepo at the University of Applied Sciences Eastern Switzerland HTW Chur. Our prototype of MMRepo is a combination of the Invenio portal solution from CERN with a Hadoop 2.0 cluster using the DDI 3.3 beta metadata scheme for data documentation.
